Open APK files in Android, MAC, IOS, and Windows. An APK file is a file used to install apps for Android and Google’s mobile operating system. Some apps come pre-installed on Android devices, while others are downloadable from Google Play Store. However, some apps must be downloaded and installed from third-party websites in the form of APK files. In this guide, we’ll be showing you how to open an APK file on your device.
What is an APK File?
APK stands for Android Package. This file type uses the Google Android working system to save all the files necessary for the application. These files include manifest files, signatures, resources, libraries, strings, and many others.

Downloading APK Files
Typically, an APK file runs on the background when you’re downloading an app via Google Play. Some websites also let you download APK files for manual installation.
However, it might be risky to download APK files outside Google Play. Those files could contain malware and harm your device and collect personal information. So before downloading any APK file, make sure that you’re downloading from trusted sources.
How to Open an APK File
An APK file runs smoothly on an Android device. However, you can also run it on other operating systems as long as you use Android emulators. One of my favorite emulators is BlueStacks. This software lets you run a virtual Android device on your gadget. Once you’ve installed BlueStacks, you can run APK files on your gadget.
Before you can download and open an APK file on an Android device, you must first change the settings on your phone. Make sure that you enabled unknown sources under settings. Follow the steps we have written below:
- Make sure that the option to install an application from an unknown source is enabled on your device. To do this, navigate to your device’s Settings. Tap on Security and then enable Unknown Sources.
- Go to a reliable website and download the APK file and then store it on your local storage
- Double click the APK file and follow the on-screen prompts.
To view the content of APK file using Windows OS, change the .apk file extension to .zip and open using file compression tools such as Win ZIP and Win RAR. Take note that you could only view the files, and it will not run in the Windows OS.
If you want to install the APK file in your PC, you can download third-party software that emulates Android Operating System like Bluestacks. When using BlueStacks, go to My Apps tab and select Install APK at the bottom right corner of the window.
To open the APK file in MAC OS, you can use Arc Welder. This is a Google Chrome extension meant for testing Android applications in Chrome OS but also works on any other OS like Mac and Windows. Once you install Arc Welder on your Mac computer, you will be able to view the APK file content.
Open APK File: Conclusion
APK files are designed solely for Android devices. If you want to open APK files using other operating systems, you can download Android emulator software. Before you download any APK files from the Internet, make sure that your source is trustworthy to protect yourself from malware.
